Keep on rocking in the free world...

We watched "Into the Wild" last night, and you know what? It was fantastic! It totally reminded me of our time in New Zealand, the reasons why we went, and the things we experienced and learned. Only that the guy in the movie was 1000 times more hardcore than us. He took it to the absolute extreme. Of course he also died in the end. I especially liked the way the movie was told in chapters, representing the different phases of his life, which prepared you for the end a little better I guess.

And since I'm too lazy to make it into a separate post, I would like to draw everyone's attention to the situation in Tibet. It seems to be high priority in the German news, but on the NY Times, LA Times and Wall Street Journal hompages, I haven't seen it make the frontpage yet. Probably missed it, but maybe they don't think it's a big deal when Tibet gets almost completely shut off from the outside world, journalists have to leave, and those that somehow manage to stay get reprimanded for reporting what they see. Meanwhile, the Chinese government is churning out propaganda about the situation and sending a massive amount of troops to 'stabilize' the situation. You can think about the protests what you want, personally I feel they have the right to more autonomy, but I think we all should take a moment to appreciate the fact that we live in a functioning democracy with freedoms that a lot of people in the world do not enjoy. And I know you can accuse me of anti-Chinese sentiments for this, but I think using and buying products made in China is becoming more and more of a moral issue.
